A three member delegation of Indian scientists headed by Dr. Arabinda Mitra, Head, International Bilateral Cooperation, Department of Science & Technology (DST) is visiting Mexico City from 17-19 July 2016 for the 6th Meeting of Mexico-India Joint Committee on Science & Technology. The meeting will be Co-chaired by Dr. Arturo Borja Tamayo, Director of International Cooperation, Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CONACYT), Mexico.
2.During the meeting of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Mexican President Mr. Enrique Peña Nieto in Mexico City on 8 June 2016, the two leaders had directed early holding of the meeting of Joint Committee on Science and Technology.
3.During the Joint Committee meeting, a new programme on cooperation in S&T for the period 2017-2019 will be signed. The two sides will discuss S&T priorities in Mexico and India, review the ongoing bilateral cooperation and set the road map for future cooperation between CONACYT and DST. The project proposals received in response to the Call-2015 by the Mexican and the Indian side will also be finalized and approved during the meeting.
4. India and Mexico had signed Agreement on Cooperation in S&T in the year 1975. Since then, several joint projects have been launched and joint workshops held in diverse areas. In the bilateral Joint Commission Meeting held in New Delhi in October, 2014, four specific areas for closer cooperation were identified by the two sides. These are (i) Improvement of crop productivity (bio-fertilizer, biocontrol and bioremediation of pesticides and RNAi technology, transgenic crops) (ii) development of new ways for water treatment, wastewater recycling and water desalination; (iii) mitigation of earthquake hazards; and (iv) leveraging opportunities to develop new generation photovoltaic and grid integration in the area of Solar Energy.
