Ambassador Sujan R.Chinoy participated in a Ceremony at the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT) in Guadalajara (Jalisco State), Mexico, on 4 June 2013, to mark the award by the Comptroller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of India of Geographical Indication for Tequila. Others present at the event were the President of the Tequila Regulatory Council Mr. Miguel ángel Domínguez, Minister for Economic Development of Jalisco State Mr. José Palacios Jiménez, Director General of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) Mr. Miguel Angel Margáin and the Regional Coordinator of ProMexico Mr. Sergio Ríos Martínez. More than fifty major producers and exporters of tequilaparticipated in the event, which was widely covered by the local and national media.

India is now among the 43 countries to have accorded Geographical Indication for tequila, an iconic Mexican export. Tequila is an appellation granted only to the distilled products of the blue agave plant from the region around Tequila town in Jalisco State.

According to statistics from the Tequila Regulatory Council, tequila exports to India in 2012 amounted to 90,277 litres, all by just eight companies. In April 2013, the exports amounted to 29,154 litres oftequila.

India received the application from the CRT for registration of Geographical Indication for Tequila on September 26, 2011, and the formal legal procedures were completed in January 2013.

Ambassador Chinoy said that the large middle class in India of about 300 million people and growing prosperity could provide an attractive market for tequila exporters from Mexico. He added that the combination of tequila with the famous image of mariachi, for which the state of Jalisco also possessed geographical indication, could prove a winning formula in the Indian market (full video of the speech in Spanish may be accessed on Youtube at
